Carole Kim is a LA-based interdisciplinary artist with a focus on video projection for multi-media installation, performance and photography.
Carole Kim was classically trained with hands-on techniques such as painting and sculpting. When switching to digital media, she is still able to maintain her strong foundations and utilize her skills to branch out in multiple directions. Her work often combines digital aspects with physical performances and installations, which gives the live audience an one of a kind experience.
At the beginning of her presentation, Carole led an group exercise. We closed our eyes and communicated with another person using only one fingertip. It was a weird dance of trust and intuition. Carole explained that this is the kind of relationship she strives to achieve with her creative work. She wants to lead and be lead at the same time, forming a healthy communication with her project.
During her residency in Norway, Carole arrived without much of a plan and experimented with projections. During dark, she projected images onto trees in the forest, using nature as the canvas. The results are very interesting and led to Carole's collaboration with Descanso Gardens, where she continued her collaboration with nature.
Carole's largest and most intense projects are her LUMINEX-LA series. For four hours, a combination of actors and digital live performance takes place in a local LA spot. Carole claims it is extremely intense since all the imagery is being coordinated with the actors' peformance live. For her latest project, LUMINEX 3, she started her concept with her mother who has dementia. She was inspired by the concept of "forgetting", and wrote to her friends for their thoughts on the subject. She was flooded with deep personal responses and used those responses to project onto a building during LUMINEX 3. Even though the project started with someone close to her, the ultimate outcome was universal and relatable for all audience.
